The Heart of Provence is famous for its iconic landscapes of rolling fields of aromatic lavender surrounded by medieval villages, ancient Roman remains, the majestic city of Avignon, wonderful local markets and fantastic food and drink - a true feast for all the senses. We have increased this tour to 10 days from last years 9-day tour.
Tuesday Our luxury coach will depart this morning, and head to Folkestone for our Eurotunnel train to Calais, from there we continue to Troyes to our overnight hotel and evening meal. Welcome tea/coffee and juice on arrival. Comfort stops on route.
Wednesday We leave Troyes after breakfast and travel south to our main hotel in the beautiful medieval market town of Uzès, our base for the next 7 nights.
Thursday Our first full day in Provence and we are visiting the most Roman city outside Italy! the remarkable city of Nimes. Boasting the largest and best-preserved Roman arena, seating up to 24,000, still used today for concerts and mock gladiator battles! Nearby is the Maison carrée, perhaps the worlds most perfect Roman temple, also the roman history museum. Nimes is famous for being one of the most attractive towns in Mediterranean France with its tree lined boulevards, popular with tourists worldwide on account of its Roman remains and old town. Free time to explore at leisure before returning to the hotel mid-afternoon to relax before dinner.
Friday We begin our day to the medieval village of Les Baux-de-Provence. Perched on top of a fortified rocky site, we visit the unique Carrières de Lumières, an amazing multimedia show inside a huge manmade rock cavern. After this fantastic experience we continue to the romantic town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, which attracts artists and tourists, is famous for its lavender and location where Van Gogh painted The Starry Night. An opportunity to have lunch and browse this beautiful town with its cosmopolitan shops and quaint cafes. We return to the hotel for same olive and wine tasting before this evenings dinner.
Saturday Today is your first free day in Uzès and an opportunity to enjoy the towns weekly market!
Sunday Today we visit the ancient Roman aqueduct of Pont Du Gard, an amazing feat of beautiful Roman engineering built over 2000 years ago to take water to the City of Nimes over 50 kilometres away. We include entrance to the visitors centre which provides an interactive insight into how the aqueduct was made. We will also enjoy a 40 minute steam train ride this afternoon on the Vapeur des Cevennes from Anduze to St Jean du Gard following the magnificent, forested valleys along the Gardon river.
Monday This morning we head to the beautiful city of Avignon, set on the banks of the Rhône with dramatic views of its 800-year-old medieval ramparts surrounding the magnificent Palais des Papes. The famous Pont davignon nursery rhyme fame sits majestically halfway across the Rhône and the city teems with cobbled streets, quaint boutiques and leafy squares. We will also enjoy an afternoon cruise on the Rhône to see the majestic city from the river.
Tuesday Your second free day and a chance to use the hotel pool and relax in the late spring sunshine or once again take a stroll into the local charming little town of Uzès and the Place aux Herbes square with its beautiful arcade houses, cafes and restaurants.
Wednesday Sadly we say goodbye to Uzès and make our way back to Troyes for our overnight stop. Dinner on arrival.
Thursday We leave Troyes and make our way back to Calais and our Eurotunnel crossing, after a wonderful holiday in the Provence. Once back in the UK we journey back to Wiltshire and our waiting taxis early evening after a memorable holiday.
This traditional family run hotel sits in a tranquil position at the foot of the beautiful town of Uzès. All bedrooms are en-suite with TV, hairdryer and air-conditioning. There is also a pleasant outdoor swimming pool, gardens and terrace to relax in.
