The 4* Park Royal hotel and spa in Warrington is our base for this interesting tour which includes, The ‘Concorde’ experience, ‘The Anderton Boat lift’, a canal cruise with a fish & chip lunch, a steam train ride plus a land-train to take you round the beautiful grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum.

 

Tour Itinerary

 

Thursday – We depart Wiltshire this morning and head to Worcester for a lunch time stop. We continue to our hotel to be welcomed with tea & coffee on arrival while your cases are taken to your rooms. Time to settle in before tonight’s dinner.

 

Friday – We begin our day with a steam train from Rawtenstall to Bury on the East Lancashire Heritage railway. We continue with the nostalgia and visit Bury’s Transport Museum for a step back in time, plenty of fascinating exhibits including an original steam locomotive. This afternoon we visit the very famous Bury market, an opportunity to pick up a bargain from its large indoor market hall.

 

Saturday – This morning we will be visiting the city of Lancaster, one of England’s heritage cities. With its castle, cathedral, and city maritime museum, standing on the shores of the River Lune, you’ll have this morning to explore at leisure. At lunch time we join the ‘Kingfisher’ boat for a 1.3/4 hour ‘fish & chip’ lunch cruise through the city and up to the spectacular Lune Aqueduct. A short break to enjoy the views before we return enjoying a nice cuppa as we sail back to where the coach will take us back to the hotel mid-afternoon for a chance to use the hotel facilities.

 

Sunday – We begin our day with a ride on the iconic ‘Anderton Boat lift’ to enjoy an hour-long cruise from this mighty and magnificent structure that was built in 1875 to transport boats up 50 feet between the Trent & Mersey canal and the River Weaver. Often called the ‘Cathedral of the canals’ the lift is a marvellous structure designed by Edwin Clark showing the impressive abilities of Victorian engineering. This afternoon we will take you to Runway visitor park, home to a variety of retired planes including the supersonic airliner Concorde G-BOAC. We are including a tour of this iconic aircraft including a chance to visit the flight deck and sit in the luxury leather seats as your guide tells you the story of this magnificent aircraft.

 

Monday – After a leisurely breakfast we leave our hotel and begin our journey home via the National Memorial Arboretum, a British site of remembrance. This expansive site features almost 400 thought-provoking memorials, nestled amongst lush woodland. We are including a 45-minute land train ride for you through the park, the best way to see at least 75% of the park. We continue after lunch back to Wiltshire and your waiting taxis.
