Cantabria in Northern Spain offers a stunning coastline, an enviable range of historic villages and ports and the beautiful Picos de Europa mountains. Our 4* hotel has a spectacular setting in the village of Isla, overlooking the bay and close to Santander, a perfect base to enjoy this picturesque corner of northern Spain. We include fabulous excursions and wine & mineral water each night in the hotel.

 

Tour Itinerary

           

Wednesday-Thursday – A relaxed beginning to your holiday as we leave Wiltshire and travel down to Plymouth for our mid-day ferry crossing to Santander. Our ‘mini cruise’ takes approx. 20 hours so you will enjoy an en-suite cabin (no bunk beds) and have time to explore this huge ship for the duration of your journey. Please note that meals on board the ferry are NOT included. Once we have docked in Santander, there will be free time for you to explore before we take you all to a local restaurant for lunch before continuing the short drive to our hotel for the next 7 nights.

 

Friday – A day to relax on the resort, enjoy the hotels lush gardens which have direct access to a sandy beach. The hotel has a beautiful outdoor swimming pool and terrace and, is only a 5-minute walk from the centre of the village.

 

Saturday – Today we visit Santillana del Mar a village on the world heritage list, best described as a living museum. This afternoon we visit Comillas the ‘city of Archbishops’ before returning to the hotel to relax before dinner.

 

Sunday – This morning we visit the fishing town of Castro Urdiales with its beautiful beaches and scenic harbour situated on the Bay of Biscay. Famous for its fishing especially sardines and anchovies the town is quite modern although its castle and gothic style parish church dates from the middle ages. We are including a boat trip around the bay this afternoon.

 

Monday – A full day to the Picos de Europa Mountain range. We will stop in San Vicente an old fisherman’s refuse offering one of the most picturesque landscapes on the Cantabrian coast with its beaches and exceptional backdrop of the snow-capped mountains of the Picos de Europa. We then join the river Deva Valley, passing through a canyon and on to Potes, a lovely market town set high in the mountains. A trip to the amazing Picos de Europa Mountain range would not be complete without taking a cable car to its peak, so we’re including this experience for those who wish to see the mountains from a bird’s eye view!

 

Tuesday – Today we are visiting the coastal town of Llanes, considered as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. This charming resort with the Picos mountains behind is a lovely old town with its medieval walls and numerous impressive buildings including the circular medieval tower which homes the tourist office. The harbour with its ‘Los Cubos de la Memoria’ (cubes of memory) is a breakwater to protect the harbour. Designed and brightly decorated to represent the towns history, fauna, and flora, an unexpected site to see! Back to the hotel to relax before dinner.

 

Wednesday – Your second free day to explore or relax!

 

Thursday – We leave our hotel today and head back to Santander with some free time before boarding the afternoon sailing back to the UK.

 

Friday – Arriving back in the UK, we drive the short distance home to arrive back to Wiltshire late afternoon after a fascinating holiday in Green Spain.
