The picturesque, timber-framed town of Wernigerode on the north slopes of the Harz Mountains is the beautiful location of our main hotel for this tour. We’ve included excursions to beautiful towns like Goslar, Quedlinburg, Blankenburg and Sangerhausen. Our hotel in Wernigerode provides the perfect base for a magical fairytale tour.

 

Tour Itinerary

Saturday – Our Luxury coach departs Wiltshire this morning and heads down to Folkestone for our Eurotunnel crossing to Calais. We continue to Aachen in Germany for our overnight stop. Comfort stops on route.

 

Sunday – We continue through Germany after breakfast to our main hotel in the Harz mountain area and the beautiful town of Wernigerode, our base for the next 7 nights. Arriving late afternoon, enjoy a complimentary Schierker Feuerstein on arrival while your luggage is taken to your rooms.

 

Monday – A free day today to explore the beautiful town and an opportunity to enjoy the hotel’s sauna, steam bath and jacuzzi.

 

Tuesday – A certain highlight of our tour today as we travel on the nearby narrow-gauge railway for a steam train ride up to the summit of the highest of the Harz mountains, the ‘Brocken’, for that ‘top of the world’ experience. This one-and-a-half-hour journey will take us to the summit for panoramic views and a restaurant for an opportunity to have lunch before our return journey back down the mountain around an hour later. Arriving back in Wernigerode mid-afternoon for some free time at leisure or relaxation at our hotel before tonight’s evening meal.

 

Wednesday – This morning we travel to Sangerhausen and the worlds largest Rose garden with an unparallel collection of over 75,000 roses. A living museum that impressively presents the history of the development of the rose from the wild to the modern rose we are familiar with today. After this experience we continue to the charming town of Blankenburg known for its historical sights and picturesque charm. An opportunity for lunch here and to visit the old town which is the largest city in the Eastern Harz region and boasts beautiful restored half-timbered houses, city walls and spacious gardens.

 

Thursday – Todays excursion takes us to the medieval town of Goslar, a historic town in Lower Saxony at the foot of the Harz mountains. We are including a tour around the town on the local ‘Land train’ exploring at ease the cobbled streets with its old town square and market fountain. This unassuming town was propelled to unprecedented levels of wealth and prosperity from the simple discovery of silver ore in a nearby mountain. This mine shifted the fortunes of many generations of Goslar residents, attracted the attention of the early Holy Roman Emperors who deemed the area a suitable residence, fit for kings. An opportunity for lunch before we continue our day back to our base town of Wernigerode to visit one of the most beautiful miniature parks in Germany showing 60 culturally and historically interesting buildings of the Harz in a miniature landscape with dwarf trees, streams and gardens. Detailed models, charming miniature landscapes that replica real size buildings in this area. 1.5 hectares at 1.25 scale for you to enjoy this afternoon.

 

Friday – Today we travel to the birthplace of Germany. Where the great Saxon emperor Henry the Fowler, was buried in 936 ‘Quedlinburg’ with its 16^th century castle and 12^th century Romanesque church of St Servatius dominates the area. Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site, courtesy of its exceptionally preserved Romanesque architecture. This afternoon we continue our day to visit the 458-metre steel suspension bridge, the ‘TITAN RT’ which hangs 100 metres above the Rappbode Reservoir. There is a viewing tower to see the dam with breathtaking views and for those who dare, you’ll have the opportunity to actually walk across this mighty feat of engineering for the ultimate adrenaline rush!

 

Saturday – Your second free day to relax or explore as you wish.

 

Sunday – We leave our main hotel in the Harz region and head for our overnight hotel in Liege via the impressive and iconic Mohne Dam, best known for being breached by the British Royal Air Forces ‘Dambusters’ squadron during operation Chastise in WWII. Dinner on arrival in Liege.

 

Monday – Leaving Liege this morning and head up to Calais for our Eurotunnel crossing. Back to the UK and our waiting taxis after a wonderful experience in the Harz Mountains.
