Devon Explorer – Summer on ‘The English Riviera’

Join us for this lovely summer break, staying in the ever-popular Babbacombe Hotel, our base for 7 nights. We are including a variety of lovely excursions including ‘Steam & Cruise’ to Dartmouth, a traditional Devon cream tea on Dartmoor, Babbacombe model village, the Babbacombe Theatre Variety Show and visits to the lovely resorts of Sidmouth, Bridport, Brixham and Weymouth. With superb carvery meals and live entertainment each evening in our hotel, this tour offers an opportunity for relaxation, interesting days out and free days to do as you please!

 

Tour Itinerary

 

Monday – We leave Wiltshire this morning and head down to Devon and our hotel in Babbacombe. We will have a lunchtime stop in the lovely resort of Bridport, before arriving at our hotel mid-afternoon. Tea and coffee on arrival while your cases are taken to your rooms. Time to settle in before tonight’s dinner and entertainment.

 

Tuesday – A scenic drive today as we head towards Dartmoor via the beautiful Buckfast Abbey, a Benedictine monastery at Buckfast founded in 1018. Free time to explore this Abbey church with its mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. We continue our day travelling amid the beautiful scenery of Dartmoor National park to the small village of Princetown where we’ll enjoy a delicious cream tea.

 

Wednesday – A free day to explore the Torbay area, with the fantastically entertaining Babbacombe Show to look forward to this evening after dinner.

 

Thursday – A full day excursion by coach to begin with to Paignton where we will travel by steam train to Kingswear. We continue by crossing the river Dart by ferry to board a circular river cruise passing Kingswear and Dartmouth Castles, Britannia Royal Naval college and Greenway house, home to the late Agatha Christie. You’ll have some free time in Dartmouth to explore and have lunch before our return steam ride back to Paignton. A lovely day out before returning to the hotel to relax before tonight’s dinner and entertainment.

 

Friday – Today we visit the lovely seaside town of Sidmouth nestled in the heart of Devon with its regency architecture and timeless charm sitting amidst spectacular countryside making this beautiful town a unique blend of rural tranquillity and seaside fun. Explore at leisure, enjoy lunch in any of the local cafes and tearooms before we visit Sidmouth’s famous Donkey Sanctuary where 100’s of rescued donkey’s find their ‘happy ever after’ homes. Award winning gardens and informative talks and of course a chance to meet the adorable donkey’s including the miniature versions completes your afternoon visit.

 

Saturday – After breakfast this morning we visit the fascinating nearby ‘Babbacombe Model Village’, famous for its miniature landscaped gardens and buildings, lending it to be branded as one of Europe’s premier model villages. We continue our day across the bay from Torquay to another of Devons finest towns, Brixham, once the busiest fishing port in the south of England. This picture-perfect little slice of the English Riviera with breathtaking views, attracts a slower pace of life, a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy an ice cream or some local seafood, quaint little shops and unspoilt beaches.

 

Sunday – Your second free day to enjoy Babbacombe with its unspoilt coastline, calm clean beaches, easily accessed by the Babbacombe cliff railway, a fun, unique and less physically demanding way to access this sheltered beach rather than using the steps.

 

Monday – Today we leave our hotel and begin our journey home via the lovely Dorset town of Weymouth for a lunchtime stop. We return to Wiltshire and your taxis after a lovely holiday on the English riviera.
