Staying in the 4* Thorpe Park Hotel & Spa, located 6 miles from Leeds and part of the Thwaites hotels, the AA hotel group of the year. We are including a steam train with cream tea, visits to Harewood House, Temple Newsam, York, and Harrogate and an Easter Sunday lunch as well as dinner, bed and breakfast for 4 nights. This lovely Easter break enjoys the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside along with interesting excursions and a relaxation in a superb hotel with spa facilities.
Good Friday After a leisurely breakfast we leave the hotel and travel to the lovely town of Harrogate for a morning coffee stop before continuing our day with a visit to the spectacular Stately home of Harewood House. The Harewood family still own and live there on the upper floors, but the house is huge and very impressive and full of historically significant fixtures, furniture and personal touches. The grounds are sprawling and well landscaped, the 1 mile drive up to the house greets this grand and imposing house with a huge lawn to the front and incredible sculpted gardens around the other side below a large veranda. The grounds hold a large lake full of birds and there is also a large bird sanctuary with a collection of birds from around the world including a penguin house. You can visit all the ground floor rooms in the house including the grand hall, state bedrooms, the libraries and kitchens. The old stables have been turned into a restaurant and gift shop with their home-made fudge as a speciality. We return back to the hotel mid-afternoon for traditional hot-cross buns, tea and coffee before tonights evening meal.
Saturday This morning we are taking you to the beautiful City of York. You will have nearly 3 hours to explore the citys numerous attractions if you wish before we continue the day with an hour-long return steam train ride on the Embsay and Bolton railway. We are also including a cream tea to enjoy as you ride through the Yorkshire countryside on this heritage locomotive. Back to the hotel to relax before dinner.
Easter Sunday After a relaxed Easter breakfast we are taking you the short distance to a Tudor-Jacobean house Temple Newsam, known as the Hampton Court of the north. Delve into 500 years of history as this magnificent house has a tumultuous past, being seized from Thomas Lord Darcy by King Henry VIII in 1537 and again by his daughter Queen Elizabth I, after Henry Lord Darcy married Mary Queen of Scots. The mansion has 42 rooms and outstanding examples of Tudor, Jacobean and Victorian design, especially the magnificent wallpapers on display along with a fantastic collection of Chippendale furniture and a huge silver collection! The house is set in 1500 acres of landscaped grounds with walled gardens, an original rhododendron walk and formal gardens and ponds. Enjoy around two and a half hours on this magnificent estate before we return to the hotel for a traditional Easter Sunday lunch. The rest of the day is yours to relax in the hotel gardens and terraces or to use the hotel spa facilities. There will be a light buffet served this evening.
Easter Monday We leave Yorkshire this morning and make our way south back to Wiltshire after a memorable Easter break.
